I'm back after some r&r with this month's best buy. Becasue I couldn't find anything just right on the web (although the MOCP's 2006 limited edition prints came close), I decided to do something a little different.
I'm offering this sketch by Kojo Griffin to the highest bidder. The sketch is signed and dated and measures 9 x 12 inches. Last summer a similar size drawing sold at Christies for $1560. I will take no commission on the sale; all the proceeds will go to Kojo.
Here's how it will work: Please email me the highest price you are willing to pay for the sketch by May 10th. The highest bid will be offered the piece first. This is like a sealed bid auction. I will not disclose how the bidding is going.
C'mon! Give it a try! Who knows, you may get a great drawing for $10!
Erik,
I love your format and I think the blind auction is a great idea. I sell art work and I may steal this idea for my blog with a piece or two! Thanks

Erik,
Your gesture to artist Kojo Griffin is well taken but auctioning a work is not a good idea for any young artist. If anything, it can only harm a young artists career in the market. Suppose you only make $150 dollars for the drawing and a dealer buys it. That same dealer can turn around and sell it for street value and make more money than you, Kojo or any auction house.
This kind of approach is wreckless and naive at best and deserves reproach. Why not hold on to the drawing and instead allow for the artist to develop his work without market influences which are already a problem with most young successfull artists.
