I'm just beginning to digest the fall auction results, but it seems like insanity prevails.
Exhibit A:
This Loretta Lux sold for over $45K
Exhibit B:
This Dana Schutz sold for over $96k
Regardless of what you think about these artists (I try not to think about them very often), these are middlin' pieces.
That Lux photo probably went for less than $3k one year ago when she was showing at Yossi Milo.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on Lux. Yes, they are overpriced but the work is solid. Disclosure: I have 3.

45k is quite a bit for a lady who's art is basically making kids look like twins from The Shining

I'm happy for Dana Schutz but it is crazy. She's only 26! Can she sustain these kinds of prices or will she be 'washed up' and spit out by the art world at 30? Michael Kimmelman would NOT like any of this, although he believes artists have to be long dead before their work can be of any value.
